Learn the Basics of Cannabis Below!
Categorized into the Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica, this annual flowering plant contains at least 113 known cannabinoids, with the most well-known being THC, CBD, and CBN.
The endocannabinoid system and its receptors are located in the brain, organs, glands, connective tissues, and immune cells. Cannabinoids such as THC bind to the receptors in the central nervous system and send out messages. They create a type of dialogue with the body that can affect appetite, digestion, pain, sleep cycles, stress, inflammation and so much more.
The chemical compounds found throughout the cannabis plant that reacts with our endocannabinoid system in different ways are known as cannabinoids. The more we understand the different cannabinoids, the better we can target specific medical symptoms. THC is known for its psychoactive properties. Therapeutic effects may offer pain relief, appetite stimulation, and relaxation. CBD won’t cause a high sensation and is showing promise in muscle relaxation, pain relief, and as an anti-inflammatory. Other cannabinoids include THCV, THCA, CBC, CBG, and CBN.
Sativas typically include high THC levels and are known for uplifting effects. Indicas are usually higher in CBD and are often used for sedative, relaxing effects, and anxiety relief. There are also hybrids that combine the two and lean toward different traits.
Different cannabis plant genetics/varieties are referred to as “strains”. Each strain will have a specific effect given its unique combination of cannabinoids and terpenes. Popular strains include Pineapple Express, Do-Si-Dos, Gorilla Glue #4.
Cannabinoids are some of the naturally-occurring, active ingredients found in cannabis. There are a minimum of 113 cannabinoids. Some are psychoactive while others are non-psychoactive and touted for their health benefits. The human body has receptors to which these cannabinoids can bind. The most popular of these cannabinoids are THC and CBD. THC, otherwise known as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of the only cannabinoids that will get you high. CBD, otherwise known as cannabidiol, does not have the intoxicating effects of THC but it is associated with calming and relaxing physiological effects. Newer cannabinoids like CBC, CBN, and CBG are currently being researched.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds that are found in many plants. In cannabis, terpenes are highly concentrated and can produce enticing smells and flavors such as pine, mint, and citrus. Some research is now demonstrating that terpenes can also play a significant role in the effects produced by a cannabis strain.
- Consume a low-THC strain.
- If taking edibles, wait at least 2 hours before taking an additional dose. For all other types, the effects should typically be felt in 30 minutes or less.
- Try to eat something beforehand since consumption on an empty stomach might lead to intensified effects.
- Do not mix cannabis with alcohol or other drugs.
- Situate yourself in a comfortable environment, with good people, good entertainment, good conversation, and maybe a bottle of water for the “cotton mouth” (i.e., dry mouth).
- If you do get anxious, just remember that no one has ever died from a cannabis overdose. EVER.
- Let our budtenders consult you on what strain and consumption method makes most sense for you!
